City celebrates International Women’s Day

The Ho Chi Minh City Women's Union held a ceremony to celebrate the 102nd anniversary of International Women’s Day and the 1,972nd anniversary of the Trung Sisters’ Uprising, on Thursday, March 8.

Le Hoang Quan, Chairman of the People’s Committee in HCMC; Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Party Central Committee member and Deputy Secretary of the HCMC Party Committee; Nguyen Van Dua, Deputy Standing Secretary of the HCMC Party Committee; Than Thi Thu, Head of the Department of Propaganda and Training of the HCMC Party Committee; Vietnamese Heroic Mothers and many woman officials from 24 districts in the city attended the event.

According to the Chairwoman of the HCMC Women's Union, the union has built and repaired around 140 charity houses at a total cost of VND 9 billion (US$428,000); created jobs for more than 2,000 people; financed 17,122 disadvantaged households; offered 10,000 scholarships and honoured 220,000 outstanding women.

Nguyen Van Dua, Deputy Standing Secretary of the HCMC Party Committee, congratulated all women in the city and expressed appreciation of their outstanding contributions in daily activities, social affairs, building and protecting the country.

On this occasion, the Ho Chi Minh City Women's Union has launched a movement supporting disadvantaged women and children in the city for the year 2012.

The Labour Union of Ho Chi Minh City presented gifts to 195 disabled female labourers and victims of accidents at work at the City Labour Cultural Palace on the same day.
