Managers of the Phong Dien Nature Reserve in the central province of Thua Thien – Hue yesterday announced that two civet and seven rare animals which were believed to be in the extinct in the globe were recorded in the reserve.
A camera traps, set up by the nature reserve and the Viet Nature Conservation Center, have been used to capture images of the rare and elusive carnivores took a photo of two kinds of large-spotted civets, a species that was believed to be extinct in the globe.
Owston’s CivetChrotogale owstoni and large-spotted Civet Viverra megaspila are listed in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
The Owston’s CivetChrotogale owstoni was found in the Phong Dien Nature Reserve in Thua Thien-Hue in 2016 and the Sao La Thua Thien-Hue Nature Reserve by using camera traps while Large-spotted Civet Viverra megaspila is just recorded in the Phong Dien Nature Reserve.
As per IUCN’s report in June, 2016, the large spotted civet viverra megaspile is extinct in Vietnam and China.
