The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho enjoyed an economic growth rate of 8.32 percent in the first quarter of 2014, relatively high compared to other centrally run cities, the municipal Party Committee said on March 31.

Over the period, industrial production rose by 8.35 percent with a total value of nearly 16.5 trillion VND (784.2 million USD), up 7.9 percent from a year earlier.

Can Tho’s retail sales and service revenue amounted to over 16.1 trillion VND (767.6 million USD), representing an annual increase of 14.5 percent.

Meanwhile, turnover from tourism reached 254 billion VND (12.1 million USD) in the three months, expanding by 13 percent against the same period last year.

Also in the first quarter, Can Tho collected more than 2.4 trillion VND (116.2 million USD) for the State budget, which is said to be fuelled by the trade-service sector’s rapid growth rate.

However, its export takings recorded only 257.6 million USD, down 15.8 percent annually, with volume and value declines seen in rice, tra fish and garments.
