Ben Tre Province in Mekong delta braces for salt intrusion

Four percent salt water begun to intrude as far as 40 kilometer into rivers including Ham Luong, Co Chien and Cua Dai in the Mekong delta province of Ben Tre for four days ago.

Specifically, water with a salinity of approximaly 4 percent flowed deeply about 44 km from the mouth of Co Chien river in Mo Cay Nam District whereas saltwater of 1 percent salinity entered near Cho Lach Market meanwhile 1 percent saltwater has intruded as far as 58 kilometer into commune An Hiep in Chau Thanh District and Thanh Tan in Mo Cay Bac District.
According to weather forecasters in Ben Tre, the salinity was predicted to increase on January 27 and 28 and stable later. The risk level is first stage.
Head of the Cho Lach Department of Natural Resources and Environment Bui Thanh Liem warned the possibility of more intrusion as it has enter Hung KHanh Trung Commune neighboring with Cho Lach District
Currently, the Department is taking measures to cope with severe saltwater encroachment.
