The Alumin Nhan Co Joint Stock Company and relevant authorities should carefully consider economic benefits and measures to protect the environment while mining for bauxite in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong, President Nguyen Minh Triet said January 7.
Speaking while on a visit to the Dak Rlap District-based company, he said the Government and Party are all for exploitation of natural resources for the country’s development while also ensuring benefits to the economy, national defense, and social security.
The VND12 trillion (US$649 million) Nhan Co aluminum production plant will have a capacity of 650,000 tons a year when built in 2011.
The plant site has been cleared and the project report on environmental impact has been approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
Later that day President Triet also called on officials and workers at the Dak Rtich Hydropower Plant construction site in the same district.
He then met People’s Court and police officials.
At the court, President Triet, who is also the head of the Central Steering Committee for Judicial Reform, called for more efforts to train human resources so that there are enough competent judges.
At the meeting with the police, he discussed public order in rural areas, especially in remote mountain areas where ethnic groups live.
Besides stepping up vigilance, the police should also improve training for officials and soldiers and try to earn the trust of local residents, he said.
