The event ushered in a new era of independence, peace and national unity, war veteran Tran Van Ha recalled.

Mr. Ha was responsible for hanging the flag, which weighed more than 30kg and measured 8 meters in width and 12 meters in length.

It took five days for the Phu Xuan regiment of the Battalion No.1, Company No.3 to move the flag from the Mo Tau base in Phu Loc District to the ancient capital of Hue.

“I thought, although I made sacrifices, I will not lose the flag and complete the [important] task. My comrades and I had to work out how to hang the flag on the 37m-high concrete tower,” said Mr Ha.

They carried out the duty successfully, however, and the flag, marking the liberation of Hue, was raised in front of a joyous crowd.
