Two die from landslide in Can Tho

A riverbank landslide at the Long Hoa Market in Binh Thuy District in the Mekong Delta province of Can Tho early on the morning of May 9 left two people dead and five others injured.

Dinh Cong Kich was selling fish at the market when dozens of kiosks along with the market management office fell into the Rach Cam channel. As the landslide occurred, a loud rumble was heard and for several minutes cries of distress from people echoed.

According to initial information, until 10:30 am of the same day, rescue workers and residents had saved five people from the debris. Two were already dead while the others suffered severe injuries.

The two person’s dead were Nguyen Thi Tuyet, a 68-year-old woman and Duong Thi Hoang Loan, a 30-year-old woman.

Le Hoang Nam, secretary of Binh Thuy District Party Committee, said that local authorities have blocked the site and evacuated the market stalls. All the victims have been rescued.

The district authorities will compensate the victims’ families with VND10 million each and offer free medical care to the injured.

The Long Hoa Market was built in 2008 and two years ago, many households along the Rach Cam Bridge had fallen into the river because of a landslide.
