Trade unions can facilitate economic growth: PM Dung

The Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour has been asked to closely work with the Government in helping businesses grow and create jobs.

This would help the Government reach its growth target of 5.8 per cent in 2014 and create jobs for 1.5 million labourers, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said at the fourth meeting of the confederation's executive board in Ha Noi yesterday.

The PM said the confederation should work with authorities in restructuring the economy, building new rural areas and developing trade unions to help deep-sea fishermen safeguard their fishing interests.

Dung also asked trade unions to pay more attention to improving labourers' lives, protecting their legitimate rights and benefits - and supporting institutional reforms, while helping the Party and State integrate globally.

He said the Government would work with the confederation and ministries to create preferential policies to enable fishermen to help develop the economy and protect Viet Nam's sovereignty.

Dung said that China's actions in illegally placing an oil rig in the East Sea were a serious violation of international law and threatened peace and freedom of navigation. He said Viet Nam had used peaceful measures when demanding China withdraw the rig.

He praised trade unions for making all-out efforts to prevent destruction and assist damaged companies during the recent anti-China rioting, thus strengthening investor's trust, he said.
