Several activities mark ‘World Environment Day’

Da Nang, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday held a variety of activities such as tree planting, an environment walk and clean-up group work, to mark ‘World Environment Day 2012’ on June 5.

The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union kicked off the third festival titled ‘City Youth for Environment’ in response to ‘World Environment Day’ which was attended by Nguyen Van Dua, permanent deputy secretary of the HCMC Party Committee.

At the festival many young people made 1,000 presents from recycled material and planted tree saplings. A photo exhibition titled ‘Youth for a Green-Clean-Beautiful Environment’ was also held to mark the occasion.

Besides, a ‘Green Sunday’ was hosted in 24 Districts of HCMC with participation of over 10,000 young people. They removed illegal advertisement boards, cleaned parks, cleared bushes and dredged canals.

They also planted nearly 5,000 tree saplings along the canal in Districts 12, Binh Thanh, Thu Duc, Hoc Mon, Cu Chi and Nha Be.

On the same day, the city Department of Natural Resources and Environment coordinated with the People’s Committee in Binh Tan District to celebrate ‘World Environment Day 2012’. The ceremony attracted more than 1,000 people.

More than 5,000 people took the walk for environment in Dam Sen Cultural Park. The walk was hosted by the HCMC Red Cross and Tai Nguyen-Moi Truong (Natural Resources-Environment) Magazine.

In Da Nang City, more than 2,000 residents lined the main roads in some industrial zones and residential areas to do clean-up work and collect and dispose waste.

Meanwhile, Hue City launched the ‘Summer Youth Volunteer Campaign 2012’ and organized a ‘Walk for Environment’, which was joined by over 2,000 students and 1,000 members from associations of the elderly and women, and also by former volunteers.

The Hue City Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union also organised a painting competition on ‘World Environment Day’ for children in the city.
