On April 28, the Vietnam Internet Network Information Centre (VNNIC) under the Ministry of Information and Communication officially announced the free registration of domain names in the Vietnamese language.

Free domain names in the Vietnamese language will be given to any Vietnamese and foreign organization and individual on a “first come first serve” basis.

One individual can register for five Vietnamese domain names and use free email at mail.vn.

A representative from VNNIC said that since the domain names are free, many people have rushed to register them. However, the growing demand has made it difficult to register Vietnamese domain names online.

Many people have succeeded in registering Vietnamese domain names using strange names such as 12a6-k88-thpt-htk-nghean.vn or 3giờ40phútngày30tháng4năm2011.vn.

The Management of National Domain Name “.vn” has complete authority to refuse and revoke domain names that violate registration and management rules. Users must bear full responsibility for the contents.

Tran Minh Tan, deputy director of VNNIC said that it would check Vietnamese domain names and revoke any that violate regulations. He believes that the registration and use of Vietnamese domain names such as muabánôtô.vn, chợviệt.vn and chứngkhoánviễnđông.vn not only create a quintessential Vietnamese environment on the internet but also are very important for Vietnam’s technology integration and internet resource application.
