The “Cau Ngu” (Whale Worshipping) Festival of the south central coastal province of Phu Yen was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, yesterday.

The Whale Worshipping festival is celebrated from the first to the eighth month of lunar calendar, including various rituals to worship the Whale or Ca Ong, and prayers for good seas, happiness and prosperity.
The event often takes place from 1-3 days with a wide range of rituals and ceremonies. Series of cultural activities such as traditional music performances, sport and folk games will be held during the festival.
To date, Phu Yen has three national intangible cultural heritages, Bai Choi (singing while playing cards) singing, the performing art of “double drums, triple and five-fold gongs” and Whale Worshipping festival.
