The number of prisoners receiving amnesty is expected to be the highest ever this year with about 30,000 to 35,000 people.

The Amnesty Advisory Council met in Hanoi June 16 to discuss plans to implement a newly issued presidential decision, which would make more people convicted of crimes eligible for amnesty and other benefits.
Decision 697/QD-CTN dated May 26 demonstrates Vietnam’s tolerant policy toward offenders.
The meeting was presided over by Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong, who is also chairman of the council and a Politburo member.
