He made the statement at a meeting organized yesterday by the Steering Board for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control in the Mekong delta province of Ca Mau to review natural disaster task last year and solution for next years.
Last year natural disaster had left 224 people dead or missing. The year incurred $859.7 million in damage.
Apart from that, natural disasters including river and sea landslides and flood from the upper stream in the Mekong River had caused total losses of VND117 billion.
Ca Mau Province has been suffering the most serious consequences from climate change, storm, tropical depression, rising seawater, drought, river and sea erosion as well as salinity intrusion, said Le Van Su, Deputy Chairman of Ca Mau People’s Committee.
Most residents in the Mekong delta live in weakly-built houses in estuaries and around the seashore. They need stronger shelters to withstand natural disasters.
