A solemn memorial service was held on Tuesday to see off the Vietnamese heroic mother Nguyen Thi Thu. Her nine sons, a son-in-law and two grandchildren laid down their life for Vietnam’s independence and reunification, during the wars against foreign invaders.
Thousand of people gathered, since early morning, to attend the solemn ceremony. It was hosted by the late heroic mother’s family, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs in Dien Thang Trung Commune, in Dien Ban District, in the central province of Quang Nam.
Several war veterans, who had close attachments to mother Thu’s family, grieved for her lost. Mother Thu passed away at the age of 106 and she will be sadly missed around the country.
Mother Thu had to see her sons and grandchildren go away and die for their country. One of her sons, Le Tu Chuyen died while leading a wing to liberate Saigon on April 30, 1975. It was just one hour before the country’s southern and northern regions were unified.
At the funeral ceremony, Le Phuoc Thanh, chairperson of the provincial People’s Committee, said that the death of heroic mother Nguyen Thi Thu has left a big pain in most people, and she will live forever in the hearts and minds of each Vietnamese person and their descendants.
Thanh also said, mother Thu had not demand any material compensation for her family contribution to the war and she and her husband even gave their house away, to other martyrs’ families.
Joanne Luke, an Australian from the Sponsoring Association for Disable Vietnamese, said, “I am not a mother Thu’s relative and also I don’t know much about her. Nevertheless, I can realize how great a mother she was through the people’s affection reserved on her. I am really impressed about how much the people of Vietnam loved her.”
Vietnam heroic mother Nguyen Thi Thu lies at rest at the Dien Ban District martyr cemetery, two kilometers from her house.
