The Binh Duong Province Police Department claimed at a press conference on May 14 that they had verified the identity of the man suspected of killing 40-year-old Phan Van Lan, director of a private company in Ben Cat District on May 6.
Colonel Nguyen Hoang Thao, deputy director of the Binh Duong Police Department said they had captured four men that were involved, including Pham Van Dung, Nguyen Van Tuan, Dang Viet Thinh and Pham Tuan Thanh.
Binh Duong police are hunting for four other men and have issued search warrants for 46-year-old Duong Hoang Dung alias “Ben”, suspected of shooting Lan in an armed attack at Lan Thao Private Company.
Dung “Ben” used to be a crime police officer but was laid-off and later became a member of the underworld.
He had many subordinates who were equally cold- blooded and used guns while protecting hotels and restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City. Once in September 2004, Dung “Ben” fired two shots in a restaurant on Ho Van Hue Street in Phu Nhuan District in an attempt to extort protection for the restaurant.
After shooting the director of Lan Thao Company, Dung fled from his residence.
The police said they had inspected the bullet extracted from the victim’s body and suspected Dung might have used a revolver to shoot Lan.
32-year-old Pham Tuan Thanh, the alleged instigator of the murder, gave himself up to the police at Tan Dinh Ward in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City on May 9 after hiding for several days.
Thanh told the police that he took an armed 15-strong group to Lan’s company to demand that Lan give back the remaining amount of VND500 million. However, Lan was not at the company site and the gang destroyed the company’s assets. When Lan showed up later, Dung allegedly shot him in the chest and then fled from the scene.
