Ministry orders no mobile phone rate cuts before Lunar New Year

The Ministry of Information and Communications has told Vietnamese telecom firm Viettel that it did not approve the company’s tariff cut proposal, a ministry source said Thursday.

Actually, Viettel started a rate cut of 15% on average on Monday without any approval from the ministry.

The source said Thursday that the ministry had told Viettel and other two major operators – MobiFone and Vinaphone – not to cut their tariffs before the Lunar New Year holidays, which begin Feb. 14.

According to the source, the ministry is of the view that if it lets a “tariff war” break out this moment, the smaller mobile phone networks would be affected seriously.

Some sources from the ministry said the ministry is considering some penalties against Viettel’s decision to cut rates without ministry approval.

The ministry has told operational networks to focus on quality and customer, especially seeking to avoid network jams during the Lunar New Year holidays.
