A solemn state memorial service was held at the HCMC Meeting Hall on June 5 to send the late General Mai Chi Tho to his resting place at the city’s cemetery.

When delivering his funeral speech, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung stressed that during his 71 years devotion to the National Liberation revolution, General Mai Chi Tho had always been a model party member, a strong, devoted official who had never flinched away from difficulties. His great contributions to the nation’s liberation and defense will always stay in our heart.

According to his wishes, all of the money collected from his funeral will be donated to charity.

General Tho was a member of the Party Central Committee (4th, 5th and 6th congresses) and Politburo (6th congress). He was also former Chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee and Secretary of the HCMC Party Committee.

Amongst his many awards for his contributions, during his career, he received the Gold Star Order, the highest honor given by the Vietnamese State, and a 60-year Party membership insignia.

85-year-old General Mai Chi Tho passed away last week at the Army Hospital 108 in Hanoi after suffering from a serious illness.
