The Mekong delta provinces reduced the rate of poverty households to 5.6 - 5.7 percent in 2014, lower than the national average rate, reported the Southwestern Region Steering Committee yesterday.
In a report issued yesterday the committee said that the region would strive to reduce the rate of poverty households to 4.5 percent in 2015
To achieve the target, it needs synchronous policies and projects to help families improve their economic conditions. Poverty reduction must be considered an important duty in socioeconomic growth.
In addition, the local governments should work out poverty elimination plans in which climate changes and sea rising are mentioned. The governments should also increase information to raise poor people’s awareness of their own responsibility in fighting poverty.
Good examples of those who are trying to improve their economic condition should be broadcast on public media.
To carry out the national sustainable poverty elimination planin the region, the government has provided VND302 billion (US$ 14.1 million) to disadvantaged provinces. Local authorities also called for capital from the community and sectors to support people with materials and machines for production so as to increase their income as well as provide training to inhabitants and offer jobs to them.
At present, 9 over 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong delta have the poverty households figure below 5 percent; for instance, Soc Trang with 4.5 percent, Bac Lieu with 4 percent and Tra Vinh with 3 percent.
