Farmers in the Mekong Delta are raking in VND500 million (US$24,000) per hectare from green-peel grapefruit crops grown as per Global Gap and Viet Gap standards.
On Sunday, green-peel grapefruit export companies in Ben Tre Province said that while prices of several other fruit have fallen in the Mekong Delta, the price of the green-peel grapefruit has continued to go up.
In the last few days, the price has gone up to VND36,000-40,000 per kilogram from VND30,000 a kilogram last month, bringing in profits of VND450-500 million per hectare.
Green-peel grapefruits fetch a higher price because farmers grow the fruit as per Global Gap and Viet Gap standards, which ensures export quality fruit for the European, Asian and Canadian markets.
According to the Southern Horticulture Research Institute, despite the high price, the green-peel grapefruit output in the Mekong Delta still does not meet domestic and export demands.
