More than 1,000 local people have been mobilized to re-fortify the dyke section with over 5,000 sandbags and hundreds of bamboo stakes. By the afternoon of the same day, they were able to protect much of the dyke section.

Meanwhile, a one kilometer stretch of the Ta Nghen dyke, running across Ho Do and Mai Phu communes of Loc Ha District, protecting 1,000 households with 4,000 residents, has been breached with a large section of the dyke having suffered a severe landslide.

This particular section was still being reinforced when it was suddenly faced with the onslaught of torrential rains and floods from the rivers. Now floodwaters are overflowing over the dyke, gushing right into people’s homes. Loc Ha District authorities and residents are scrambling to repair the dyke.

Ha Tinh Province is currently evacuating 27,000 people living at river mouths in Loc Ha, Ky Anh, Cam Xuyen and Nghi Xuan districts.
