Police say the accident was caused by the truck, which lost control after a flat tire. It veered towards the left and the 16-seater coach coming from behind could not avoid the truck and crashed into it.

Five people along with the bus driver died on the spot while three others died on their way to hospital, including a five year-old boy and a man and a woman, both 55-years-old.

The ten injured were taken to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

The 61.9 kilometre Trung Luong Highway opened to traffic on February 3 last year and is the country’s first highway to be used both by coaches and trucks. The highway has shortened the distance from HCMC to Tien Giang Province, from 90 minutes to only 30 minutes.
