The Criminal Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security rescued 5-year-old Nguyen Phuc Tho, who was kidnapped from his neighbourhood in Hanoi on Tuesday.
According to the Criminal Police, Tho was kidnapped at 4.30 pm on March 18 from Nghi Long Commune of Nghi Loc District in the central province of Nghe An.
The kidnapper demanded a ransom of VND180 million (US$8,600) to be transferred to his account or else he would kill the boy or take him to China for sale of his internal organs.
Police in Nghe An Province soon determined the captor as 28-year-old Dang The Hung, a resident of Nghi Loc District, already a known offender in petty and gambling.
At 10pm on March 19, police observed the suspect as he was moving a 5-year-old boy to a hotel room in Yen My District of Hung Yen Province.
By 1am on March 20, police officials arrested Hung and rescued young Tho.
