After the recent typhoon ‘Kaitak’ toppled a number of big trees in Hanoi on August 17 and 19, the concerned departments have been asked by Nguyen The Thao, chairman of the City People’s Committee, to check on all old trees and replace those that seem unsafe.

Mr. Thao instructed the Hanoi Green Tree Park Company and Department of Construction to plant trees that have tap roots which will be strong enough to withstand strong winds.
The concerned departments have also been asked to increase more equipment to clear fallen trees and in future install underground electric and telecom cables to ensure safety during the storm season, besides also beautifying the landscape.
Mr. Thao ordered the Hanoi Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and related units to examine all pumping stations in the City.
He prompted them to upgrade Dong My Station in Thanh Tri District at the earliest, which will ease the release of floodwater from inner city areas during heavy rains and flooding.
Typhoon Kaitak toppled nearly 200 trees in Hanoi and a number of them fell on top of vehicles travelling on the streets, injuring some people and putting at risk many others.
