Earlier, from August 18 - 26, staff members of the Van Xuan Investment and Development Company had gone around to residents  in the mountainous communes of Son Giang,  Son Quang, Son Ham, Son Trung , Son Truong  and Son Phu of  Huong Son District in Ha Tinh Province trying to promote and sell off the bad quality but expensive Chinese-made products.

The  Van Xuan Company staff hired a hall to advertise and sell items such as electric cookers etc, and even added free gifts such as pans, knives, saucepans with each purchase.

An electric cooker was sold for VND1,950 million (US$82), with a seven piece knife set added as free gift. Such tempting offers proved appealing to the simple-minded local residents, and hundreds willing bought many products for their daily use.

However,  soon after using these products, the people realized they had been sold low quality and faulty products, and on August 26, collectively surrounded the staff people of the company who had deceived them into buying, and asked for their money back.

Police in Huong Son District have recorded the complaints of the local residents and have ordered the staff of Van Xuan Company to return their money and take back the faulty products.
