Governor-General of Australia to pay state visit

The Governor-General of Australia, Quentin Bryce AC, will be on a state visit to Vietnam from May 8 to May 14, the Australian Embassy in Vietnam announced on May 5.

The visit will further strengthen the bilateral relations between Australia and Vietnam. The Governor-General will meet with Vietnamese leaders in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and provincial leaders in the central province of Da Nang, Hue and the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau. She will open the World Conference on Drowning Prevention in Da Nang and review HIV/AIDS, helmet safety, nursing and preventive blindness activities.

Quentin Bryce AC was sworn as the twenty-fifth Governor-General of Australia on 5 September 2008 and is the first woman to take up the office.

Her contributions to human rights and gender equality, rights of women and children and the welfare of the family have been well recognized. She was appointed as an officer of the Order of Australia in 1988 and a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2003. She was also ordained in 2003 as Dame of Grace of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.

Ms Bryce was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Law by Macquarie University in New South Wales in 1998, an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by Charles Sturt University in New South Wales in 2002 and an Honorary Doctorate of Law by The University of Queensland in 2006. She was conferred with Honorary Doctorate from the Griffith University in Queensland in 2003 and Queensland University of Technology in 2004 as well as an Honorary Doctorate from James Cook University in 2008.
