Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro's twitter page now has over 100,000 visitors, Cuba's official website "Cubadebate" said Monday.
The channel "Reflection by Fidel" on Twitter, which shares Castro's articles, was ranked as the first information service on Cuban issues due to its large audience, the website said.
Cubadebate said the channel was created a year ago on the social networking website Twitter and has an English-language version.
Fidel Castro, 84, formally resigned as Cuba's leader in February 2008 and transferred power to his brother Raul Castro. Currently, he still publishes his opinions called "Reflections."
Cuba is forced to access the Internet via satellite due to U.S. sanctions, which makes the access slower and expensive. Domestic access in the country is limited to state institutions, universities, schools and some professionals like doctors and journalists.
Last February, Cuba and Venezuela completed the installation of an undersea cable between both nations, which is expected to become operational in July this year and enhance Cuba's current connection speed by 3,000 times.
An official survey released last July showed that only 2.9 percent of Cubans had access to the Internet in the past 12 months.
