Thanks to promoting ecological diversity in rice fields and implementing smarter ways to manage pests, farmers in the Mekong delta province of Vinh Long have gained higher profit than growing usual rice, said the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The province authorities have encouraged farmers to grow ecological rice strain in two districts Long Ho and Vung Liem in more than 310 hectare of field.

Farmers have harvested average productivity of 7 tons per hectare, 0,8 tons per hectare and gained more profit of VND11 million (US$505) per hectare compared to planting normal rice for the recent winter-spring crop.

Scientists assisted technique to these farmers who participated in planting ecological rice program; accordingly, farmers are cutting their pesticide use and fertilizers leading to cutting cost but productivities and quality are still high.

The agriculture in the province said that growing ecological rice will help changing farmers’ conception and habit of growing as well as raising their awareness of scientific application on their fields to create safe and qualified rice.
