The National Council for Assessment and Acceptance of Construction Works assured as of this morning, September 28, that the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant dam located in the central province of Quang Nam was absolutely safe and stable.

This statement was made at a press conference organized by the Council and the provincial People’s Committee to report results of repairs to leaks in the dam and to reassure the public of the safety of the dam after frequent earthquakes in Bac Tra My District had caused much panic.
At the press conference, Associate Professor and Dr. Nguyen Van Lien, deputy chairman of the council, said that their conclusions matched estimations made by AF-Colendo, a Swiss independent consultant company.
Since the plant’s dam had been constructed as per specifics in design, it was stable and safe and there was no need for further fear.
However the quality of angle joints in the construction could not be fully verified as secure, which was causing the water leaks in the dam. Observation devices have not all been installed while some damaged devices have yet to be replaced. This is the responsibility of the contractor and supervision units at the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant.
Earthquakes have recently caused by water accumulation in the plant reservoir and will continue to reoccur with high intensity, perhaps even stronger. However they are unlikely to exceed 5.5 on the Richter scale, which capacity the dam can sustain.
The conclusive studies, surveys and estimations from the State Council for Assessment and Acceptance of Construction Works, the Geophysics Institute, the Ministry of Science and Technology and experts assure of the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant dam as being safe and stable.
