Binh Dinh stops vaccination of ComBE Five after baby death

Health authorities in the central province of Binh Dinh stopped vaccination of ComBE Five after the death of two-month-old newborn baby in Hoai Chau Commune, said Director of the Binh Dinh Department of Health Le Quang Hung.

As a precautionary move, Binh Dinh Province suspended immunization and reported to the provincial People’s Committee and the Department of Preventive Medicine under the Ministry of Health.
Regarding to the death of the infant, Director Hung said people should wait for conclusion of the scientific council and forensic examination.
He added the medical workers have followed proper procedure when administering the vaccine that can help fight against five common diseases including diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B and haemophilus influenza type B in infants.
Before, Chairman of the People Committee in Hoai Chau commune Tran Quoc Toan told reporters that a two-month-old infant in Hoai Nhon Commune died after being administered the ComBE Five vaccine on February 26.
The baby was taken to commune health center for vaccination by her mother, 29-year-old Nguyen Thi Y Phung, on February 26. The baby girl was kept at the center in 30 minutes later as per requirement.
However, she started crying and turned pale at 10:30 a.m. Her family rushed her back to the health center for emergency treatment. She was transferred to Hoai Nhon district Medical center 30 minutes later; however, she died at Hoai Nhon district General Hospital at 11:30 a.m.
The cause of death is under investigation.
Director of health center in Hoai Nhon Commune Tran Huu Vinh said this vaccination case is the third in the commune. Most infants were normal in the first vaccination; just some experiencing high fever or convulsion fits but they were all stable later.
