A ceremony to mark the completion of Phu My, the largest and highest cable-stayed bridge in Ho Chi Minh City over the Sai Gon River connecting Districts 2 and 7 was held on May 19.
The six-lane bridge is over 2,000m long, cost around VND2 trillion ($118 million) to build, and is expected to open to traffic on September 2, four months ahead of schedule, when the road is completed.
It is part of the outer beltway currently under construction around Ho Chi Minh City, an important transport link between the Mekong delta and the rest of Vietnam.
Nguyen Thanh Thai, general director of Phu My Bridge BOT Joint Stock Company, said the construction used the most modern technology in the world.
In related news, the management of the East - West Highway project in the city said the Cha Va Bridge connecting districts 8 and 5 would partially open to traffic in the next three weeks. Vehicles can go in one direction from District 8 to 5.
The partial opening is due to some technical problems but it would help ease traffic going from District 8 to 5, Vuong Hoang Thanh, deputy head of the management board, said.
The remaining portion will open in October.
