Vietnam has elected 496 members of the 14th National Assembly, four deputies lower than the permissible number of 500, announced secretary general of the National Assembly Nguyen Hanh Phuc at the sixth session of the National Election Council this morning.
Of the elected deputies, 317 won the election for the first time, 21 deputies are not members of the Communist Party of Vietnam and 71 young members (less than 40 year old), up 1.9 percent over the previous tenure.
182 out of 197 candidates nominated by central agencies have won the seats. Seven of the 15 unsuccessful candidates are in HCMC and four in Hanoi.
86 deputies are ethnic minority people and 133 are women, which are four and 17 lower than expected respectively. Reelected deputies hit 160, down six members over the 13th NA term. Two self-nominees win the election, a reduction of two.
Mr. Phuc also reported that 3,908 people have been voted members of provincial people’s councils eight lower than expected. District people’s councils have elected 25,179 members while commune levels have 29,273 deputies.
According to the National Election Council, the poll has promoted democratic, public and transparent sprit in every phase. However it also admitted that NA member structure has fallen behind initial expectations, especially the number of female and non-Party deputies.
