Institute of Earth Physics under the Vietnam Institute of Science and Technology has said that the continued occurrence of earthquakes and tremors in the vicinity of the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant in the central province of Quang Nam is showing no signs of abating.

Tremors should be further observed and studied in Bac Tra My District of the province, where the hydropower plant is located, the institute pointed out.
The 4.2 magnitude tremor that occurred at 8.50pm on September 3 was the strongest to take place in Bac Tra My District of the province since November last year.
Quang Nam Province has so far recorded two 3.4 magnitude quakes in November last year and one of 3.1 magnitude in March this year.
These might have been caused by fault lines or water accumulation at the reservoir of the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant.
According to the Institute of Earth Physics, Quang Nam Province has several fault lines, of which two noticeable lines are located along Tra Bong and Hung Nhuong-Ta Vi areas, which directly affect the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant.
The strongest earthquakes along these two fault lines might reach 5.5 magnitude and cause tremors of upto level 7 on the MSK64 scale.
