Traffic accidents kill 117 in five-day holidays in Vietnam

117 people have been killed in 224 traffic accidents nationwide in the five-day holiday starting on April 30, the National Committee for Traffic Safety said on May 4.

These traffic accidents also injured 151 other people. In comparison to last year’s figure, the traffic accidents decreased by 16 but the dead people increased by seven.

Though no severe traffic accidents among passenger coaches, two serious traffic accidents of official vehicles killed 6 people and made five others wounded.

Traffic accidents take place amongst motorbikes because of fast speed, encroaching on opposing lanes, not wearing helmets and drunk while driving.

Traffic police handled nearly 38,471 cases of traffic violations nationwide, issued fines totaling VND18.61 billion (US$883,602), and impounded 91 cars and 6,302 motorbikes.

Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City reported that it has admitted 345 victims of traffic accidents from April 29 to May 4. Dr. Phan Minh Hung said that most of accident victims are drunk while driving.
