Torrential rains continue to batter Lao Cai

Until yesterday afternoon, the northern province of Lao Cai continued to be lashed with torrential rains and strong winds, destroying at least nine homes and causing severe landslides in some areas.

According to the Lao Cai Hydro Meteorological Center, the sudden cloud burst caused a landslide which buried six homes in Cam Con Commune of Bao Yen District. Fortunately, the landslide occurred during the day and all the inhabitants were able to rush out.

Local authorities and rescue teams have set up temporary camps for people with no homes providing them with food etc. while evacuating others out of the danger zone.

The National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center said that the cold front moved to the northern region yesterday afternoon caused the sudden downpours and strong winds in several areas.

Rainfall was 15-35mm in most areas but it was recorded at 58-94mm in Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen and Ha Giang provinces as well as in Hanoi. Precipitation reached 210mm in Bac Quang District of Ha Giang Province.

The cold front will move further into the central parts of the central region by tonight.
