Following news that banned chemical maleic was found in tapioca starch balls that were made in Taiwan (China) and used in the making of bubble tea, the Vietnam Food Administration under the Ministry of Health ordered samples to be tested.
The National Institute for Food Control conducted tests on six samples of tapioca starch balls and 13 pearl milk tea samples and discovered no traces of any banned chemicals.
Nonetheless, the health watchdog is keeping the product under surveillance to issue timely information to consumers.
Bubble milk tea, also known as pearl milk tea, is a Taiwanese drink. Most bubble tea recipes contain a tea base mixed with fruit or milk and served with small chewy tapioca balls, commonly called ‘pearls’. |
