Self-employed laborers and those working without pay on family farms accounted for 67-75 percent of the total number of people working in Vietnam’s agricultural sector in 2007. Such workers are at a high risk of unstable income.
The figures were released January 29 at a conference in Hanoi held by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs. It was the first report to be made on Vietnam’s employment trends from 1997-2007.
According to the report, despite Vietnam’s fast-paced urban development in some areas, agriculture still plays the most important role.
And while the total number of people working in the agricultural sector declined by 13 percent during the 10-year period, in 2007, 52 percent of the population was still employed in agribusiness.
