Phan Ngoc Phuoc, a fisherman from Phu My Hamlet of Cai Tau Ha Town in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap, caught a giant barp fish on March 13 while fishing near the former My Thuan ferry port along the Tien River section that flows into the southern province of Vinh Long.
Fellow fishermen helped Phuoc haul the huge fish onshore. The pinkish white giant barp measured 2.5 metres in length and weighed 150 kilograms.
Fish traders have offered VND700,000 per kilogram (US$33.6) for the giant fish, but Phuoc has not yet responded.
Phuoc had caught a 160 kilogram giant barp two years ago, which sold for more than VND100 million (US$4,800).
Two weeks ago, another fisherman in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang had caught a 120 kilogram giant barp.
