Dr. Nguyen Anh Tri, Director of National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, on December 10 said that medical experts will take samples of soil and water from residential quarters in some districts of the northern province of Bac Giang, where many people were hospitalized for prolonged bleeding.
Medical experts from the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, the Medical Examination and Treatment Department, and Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi arrived in Bac Giang Province on December 11 to takes samples of soil and water for testing to verify the cause of the prolonged bleeding among people.
Director Tri said his institute received nine patients who suffered from the ailment, with some suffering from bleeding in the digestive tracts and some others from bleeding of gums and bruises on skin.
More worrisome was the fact that some people had to be re-hospitalized after the ailment reoccurred soon after they were discharged.
Doctors also discovered that blood of these patients was not clotting. Dr. Tri said they are possibly contaminated with a substance that prevents blood from clotting.
Moreover, the National Children Hospital in Hanoi recently received some neonates also suffering from prolonged bleeding. Tests showed they were poisoned with rodenticide that their families used. Rodenticide contains blood anticoagulants.
