Van Huu Chien, chairman of People’s Committee in the central city of Da Nang, announced at an annual press briefing on March 29 that residents had been asked to buy standardised helmets from now, approved by the city authorities, and discontinue use of old poor quality one’s.

Relevant agencies have been appointed to exchange poor quality helmets of motorcycle drivers with better quality ones, said chairman Chien.

Authorised helmet manufacturers are selling good quality helmets for VND100,000, of which the consumer only has to pay VND50,000 while the city will compensate the other half of VND50,000.

However, if old helmets belonging to residents are found to be of good quality but their shape can be destroyed during testing procedures by relevant agencies, residents will be given brand new ones without paying.

All the new helmets from now on will bear logo of Da Nang City.
