Ngo Xuan Hien, chairman of the People’s Committee of Cat Tien District in Lam Dong Province, on March 23 asked related departments to check on all vulnerable landslide spots along the Dong Nai River.
Many of the landslide prone spots lie along the river’s bank flowing through Phuoc Son village in Phuoc Cat 2 Commune, and local authorities have been asked to find solutions to tackle the situation, Hien said.
On March 21, a 400 metre stretch of the river’s bank slid into the water and blocked the flow of the river. At present, local authorities are looking into relocating three households from this area.
Residents living along the river bank constantly have to face threat of landslides, which have increased of late, and local authorities are struggling to find ways to prevent houses along embankments from being destroyed.
One of the reasons for the landslides has been uncontrolled sand mining over a period of time, which has changed the course of the river, causing the river to flow onto banks and cause much damage.
In related news, along Highway No.6, between Hoa Binh and Son La Province, about 20,000 cubic metres of rock debris fell and blocked the road in Dong Bang Commune in Mai Chau District of Hoa Binh Province on March 22.
The Civil Engineering Investment and Construction Company, the Vietnam General Road Department and local residents in the area were working at clearing the road.
Two people were killed in the rock slide.
