The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology has reported 14 hospitalised cases of ‘pig bacterium’ since the beginning of May.
At the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, there were seven patients from six provinces and cities early this year. The number of patients increased to ten in the southern provinces and central regions.
MA. Nguyen Hong Ha, deputy director of the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases said in the first ten days of May, the hospital admitted two patients from Ha Tinh and Thai Binh provinces that had contracted the Streptococcus suis bacterium and were in a serious condition. Both patients were sellers of pig tripes soup and blood pudding.
The patient from Thai Binh Province later died in her house after treatment in hospital for a few days and the other patient from Ha Tinh is still serious and in a deep coma.
