Since the beginning of this year, police in Hanoi claim they have uncovered five illegal gangs supplying large quantities of fake multi-vitamin supplements that are concentrated with toxic substances such as ‘Sibutramine’, a banned additive that can cause high blood pressure, stroke and palpitation.
Police seized and tested two weight-loss coffee brands, of unmarked origin, from a house on Mac Thi Buoi Street in Hai Ba Trung District in Hanoi, and found that it contained a high content of Sibutramine.
This is the second time police have uncovered a weight-loss coffee brand with toxic substances that was manufactured outside Vietnam and brought in illegally to sell in markets here.
Besides food items and beverages with high content of banned chemicals, herbal weight-loss medication ‘Loshou’ also contains Sibutramine.
Three months ago, police in Hanoi seized 78 packets of ‘Loshou’ from a house in Cau Giay District, which was found to contain 28.5 mg Sibutramine in every tablet.
