A dozen of patients at the Cho Ray Hospital’s Kidney department, Treatment department and Emergency room have tested positive with swine influenza several days ago, said Head of the hospitals’ Tropical Disease department Dr. Le Quoc Hung.
Soon after discovery of the outbreak, the infirmary set up isolation ward in the kidney department and provide treatment to patients, their relatives and medical workers who contacted with these patients.
Before on June 22, the infirmary detected 24 patients in departments have symptoms of high fever, cough like A/H1N1 infected people sparking fears of an outbreak after the first casualty of the disease in Vietnam in years was reported last month.
The hospital conducted tests to verify the flu virus for 17 people. Twelve of them were positive for A/H1N1 virus.
Worse, of 24 people, one succumbed to the fatal virus because of serious pneumonia and kidney failure at final stage.
As of June 23, of 12 people testing positive for the virus, two were discharged, six are being treated in the Tropical Disease department and four transfered to the other department were in stable condition.
To prevent transmission of the disease, Cho Ray hospital has set up a steering board to implement prevention mission as per the Ministry of Health’s guideline as well as closely liaise with Pasteur Institute to adopt control measures for patients’ safety.
Additionally, the infirmary separate patients who wait to see doctor. In case someone has flu symptoms, the hospital will take them to isolated ward and carry out tests.
Before, in early June, an outbreak of A/H1N1 in Tu Du Maternity infected 16 people. Later, the municipal People’s Committee sent its urgent document asking to curb the cross-transmission to the minimum as well as provide timely treatment for patients and spread to the community.
The Ministry of Health was assigned to liaise related agencies and people’s committees in districts to enhance prevention measures against H1N1, H7N9, H5N1 flu and respiratory diseases.
