414 cubic meter oil pumped out of sunken ship in Long Tau River

414 cubic meter oil pumped out of container ship sank in Long Tau River in Ho Chi Minh City’s Can Gio District yesterday, said Deputy Chief of the city’s Border Gate Major Trinh Hoang Hung.

414 cubic meter oil was extracted from the tanks of the Vietnamese-flagged container ship Vietsun Integrity with deadweight tonnage of 8,015 tones carrying around 285 containers which was on the way from HCMC to the northern city of Hai Phong sank in the river on October 19.
The oil in the fuel tanks and in trapped compartments was seen as a major pollution hazard. Accordingly, last week, Vietnamese Prime Minister requested the municipal People’s Committee to work with the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and relevant agencies to come up with satisfactory solutions to prevent oil leaking incident.
Regarding retrieval of containers, 63 sunk containers have been reportedly brought to shore safely. Head of the Hiep Phuoc Border Gate Lieutenant colonel Nguyen Thanh Son announced Hai Van Company had sent special ship to fish out another 200 containers to transport to Sai Gon VICT .
