The announcement in writing has been sent to the Plant Protection Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Vietnam had sent documents registering to export the fruit to the US for nearly ten years. After conducting surveys and considering quarantine requirements, the US has allowed star apple import requiring that the fruit must be radiated before being shipped to the market.
At present, Vietnam has 5,000 hectares of star apple trees, mainly in the Mekong Delta with the annual output of around 60,000 tons. They are most planted in Tien Giang province with 3,100 hectares and Can Tho city with 1,200 hectares.
Star apple is the fifth Vietnamese fruit exported to the US after dragon fruit, longan, rambutan and litchi. It has mainly been consumed locally and exported to China and ASIAN nations for the last past.
Recently, Vietnamese fresh dragon fruit has been present in Australia after mango and litchi. That is a result of nine years of negotiation.
