Proposal to raise penalty for child sex abuse crimes

Participants at a meeting organized by the Ministry of Justice in Hanoi on October 18 proposed an increase in penalty for child sex abuse crimes.

The meeting was held to review a year-long mission to penalize child sex offenders nationwide. Statistics show that during the period 2007-2011, investigating agencies at all levels prosecuted more than 6,500 child sex abuse offenders.

The People’s Procuracy nationwide also indicted around 5,300 cases involving 5,800 offenders. Another 5,200 cases of child sex abuse were heard at all courts with more than 5,700 offenders,

Most horrifying are sex abuse crimes on children who are only 2-3 years old. Not just Vietnamese people but also foreigners commit such crimes.

The ministry also brought notice to the fact that there was an increase in the number of crimes related to child trafficking and child sex abuse.

Participants proposed an increase in penalties for those who were involved in child sex abuse, child trafficking and also suggested protection for children and their families who were victims and witnesses of child trafficking rings.
