The crime police of Ho Chi Minh City rescued a businessman yesterday from the clutches of a gang that had kidnapped him 5 days ago for ransom.
The businessman was working in his office on Nguyen Canh Chan Street in District 1 at 9 am on July 8, when seven young men barged in and forcibly pushed him into a bus waiting outside and drove away to an undisclosed location.
Subsequently, they phoned his wife many times demanding a ransom of VND200 million (US$9,500) for releasing him.
The businessman’s wife got the ransom money ready but at the same time informed the police.
The gang continually kept switching locations to collect the ransom and finally settled on Co May coffee shop on Nguyen Canh Chan Street, asking the wife to come there with the money.
The wife arrived at the coffee shop and waited from 12am until 5pm when five of the kidnappers showed up with her husband to collect the ransom.
Immediately the police swooped down on them, nabbing all five of the gang members and took them to police headquarters on Nguyen Cu Trinh Ward in District 1 for questioning.
