More than 61 million voters registered to vote in the election which opened at 6 am (local time), with total 43,500 candidates vying for over 18,000 positions.
The most important positions in the election are 12 out of the 24 seats in the upper house Senate.
Independent surveys across the country showed that the party of President Rodrigo Duterte is likely to win most of the seats of the upper house, which will give him legal support towards his policies to fight criminals and rewrite the constitution.
The results of the vote electing municipal councillors and mayors are expected to come out hours after voting ends at 6 pm the same day. Meanwhile, results of the Senate vote will be announced on May 17.
