Son An village in the highland province of Kon Tum has in a landmark election voted a HIV/AIDS infected man as their village chief.
The People’s Committee of Son An village in Sa Thay District of Kon Tum Province on Monday announced that Duong Duc Hai, 48, a policeman in the village had been voted as their village leader.
Hai tested positive to HIV/ AIDS in July 2007. Despite his ailment, Hai continued to participate in all village activities. He and his wife, Tran Thi Yen, 40, are infected with the dangerous and incurable disease. Fortunately, their fifth child, Duong Thanh Dat, was born free of the disease.
As a precautionary measure, Hai takes his son for regular medical check ups every 6 months.
