Sai Gon Giai Phong newspaper had earlier released news that a big explosion had been reported at the private residence of Colonel Tran Ngoc Khanh, the police commissioner of the coastal province of Khanh Hoa, at  54 Phan Chu Trinh Street in Van Thanh Ward in Nha Trang City. No human casualties were reported.

The front façade of the house is currently being leased to a wedding gown store and a CD shop, while Khanh and his family members live in the back portion.

Local police have currently blocked the site for further investigations.  Although there were no casualties, the blast has caused a bad impression on society.

Local police were quick to arrive at the scene and identified some suspects who could possibly have possessed explosives in the area. By 6am on July 31, the police narrowed down on a prime suspect after information gathered from multiple sources.

On the same day, police raided the house of 56-year-old Nguyen Viet Truong, on 2 Thuy Xuong Street in Phuong Son Ward in Nha Trang City and arrested him. Truong is currently the director of Song Ma Company that specializes in minerals mining.

The police also searched another building in Suoi Cat Commune in Cam Lam District, where Truong works, and discovered 475 detonators and 30.4 kilograms of explosives and many related documents.

Truong pleaded guilty,  confessing that he had made the bomb and was the one to directly plant it in the private home of Colonel Tran Ngoc Khanh, police commissioner of Khanh Hoa Province.

He said his motive was to paralyze police investigations into serious allegations of wrongdoings in his company.

According to  Colonel Dang Van Manh, deputy police commissioner of   Khanh Hoa Province, it is common among miners to use bombs to blast rocks and for personal vengeance; hence, police were able to identify him.
